San Francisco Moms Blog recently hosted its first event at Recess in Potrero Hill, and one of the biggest hits of the day was Mr. SHAP, balloon artist extraordinaire. His names stands for Super Happenings Always Possible, and he brought this optimistic energy to SFMB’s event. Both children and adults watched in fascination as he sculpted balloons into animals, princesses, flowers, trains and even Yoda from Star Wars. It’s no surprise that he’s been voted San Francisco’s Best Party Entertainer by Bay Area Parents Magazine five times.
The children here were young, three and under, and he did a nice job of tailoring his approach to the age group. He spoke softly and calmly, sensing that some of the children were watching him cautiously, and he always had safety in the back of his mind. As one would expect with children of this age, there were lots of reminders to not eat the balloons, and the kids mostly complied because they were so excited and proud to show off what he’d created for them. In one sweet exchange, Mr. SHAP made a Thomas the Train balloon for a little boy who was scared of the (impressive) Yoda balloon he’d created earlier. The train worked like magic, perking up the boy’s mood in an instant.
Speaking of magic, Mr. SHAP is also a professional magician, so he can incorporate those skills into events when appropriate. He works with both children and adults and explained that he doesn’t just do a performance, per se. Instead, his performance and presence becomes part of the party as he interacts with the guests. My two children were certainly delighted by Mr. SHAP and happy to each have a special souvenir from the day.
